Scientists in Boston, Massachusetts have discovered that human lung stem cells do exist, contrary to most scientific thinking at present. This discovery could lead to completely new treatments that repair and regenerate damaged tissues in patients with chronic lung diseases. And developments would however take some time as there is still a lot of work to be done according to the authors of a paper published online in the New England Journal of Medicine.

The new discovery is promising

Author on the study Dr Piero Anversa, director of the Center for Regenerative Medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH) in Boston, Massachusetts, and her colleagues found the human lung stem cell to be self-renewing, playing an important role in regenerating tissue and possibly also helping to repair damaged lung cells.

They also found that the stem cell can create and integrate different biological structures of the lung, including the alveoli, the tiny breathing sacs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged between the air and blood; bronchioles, the small airways that connect the alveoli to the main airways; and pulmonary vessels, the blood vessels that supply the lungs with blood.

Anversa informed the media that her team has for the first time found a “true human lung stem cell”.

“The discovery of this stem cell has the potential to offer those who suffer from chronic lung diseases a totally novel treatment option by regenerating or repairing damaged areas of the lung,” he added.

Anversa’s co-author Dr Joseph Loscalzo, chair of the Department of Medicine at BWH said they were “excited about the impact this discovery could have on our ability to regenerate or recreate new lung tissues to replace damaged areas of the lungs”.

Yet he also noted that more research is necessary to build on these “critical first steps” before new clinical treatments for people with currently untreatable lung diseases can be developed.

Scientists in Sweden have found a new stem cell in the adult brain that could help repair diseases and injury to the brain using new methods.

The cells can proliferate and create several different cell types – most importantly, they can develop into new brain cells.

Looking at brain tissue from biopsies, the scientists at Lund University found stem cells around small blood vessels in the brain that had not been identified before.

Its exact function is still not known, but the cell’s plastic properties suggest vast potential. A similar cell type has been found in some other organs where it can encourage regeneration of bone, muscle, adipose tissue and cartilage.

When looking at other organs, scientists have found clear evidence that such types of cells promote repair and wound healing.

Researchers suggested that such healing properties may also apply to the brain. The next step would be to control and aid stem cell self-healing characteristics to eventually perform therapies that are targeted to a particular area of the brain.

“Our findings show that the cell capacity is much larger than we originally thought, and that these cells are very versatile,” noted Gesine Paul-Visse, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Neuroscience at Lund University.

“Most interesting is their ability to form neuronal cells, but they can also be developed for other cell types. The results contribute to better understanding of how brain cell plasticity works and opens up new opportunities to exploit these very features,” added Paul-Visse.

“We hope that our findings may lead to a new and better understanding of the brain’s own repair mechanisms. Ultimately the goal is to strengthen these mechanisms and develop new treatments that can repair the diseased brain,” said Dr. Paul-Visse.

The research was published in the journal PLoS ONE.

Cristina di Corte is a 22-year-old woman in search of a donor, her genetic match, for a vital stem cell transplant. Cristina has MNGIE, or mitochondrial neurogastrointestinal encephalopathy syndrome, a rare condition that only 70 people in the world have. Cristina is running out of time as the disease takes its toll on her body. At the moment her digestive system is affected, but as Cristina explains in her documentary, other organs such as her heart, eyes and ears could soon be affected too, at which stage there is not much that can be done for her. When her brother started a twitter campaign to raise awareness of her cause the outpour of support was huge. We are sharing this story thanks to the documentary’s director, Leonardo Tenan, who contacted us via Facebook. Please keep on sharing so Cristina can find her match!

The announcement that UK doctors are to conduct stem cell research using liver cells to create the possibility of helping patients without the need for a liver transplant will be great news for people with chronic disease that require transplant surgery.

Iyaad Syed was the first patient to be treated as the herpes zoster virus caused his liver to stop functioning

Liver patients die every year waiting for an organ transplant and some do not even make the transplant list due to severe organ shortages in the UK.

For those lucky enough to get an organ there is also the added risk of the liver rejecting and putting them back on the transplant list.

The UK and many other countries are facing an epidemic of serious liver disease much because of alcohol abuse and obesity which is drastically raising the need for donor livers.

The latest statistics show that about one fifth of organs transplanted every year go to recovering alcoholics.

The death count due to liver disease has increased by a quarter in the last ten years and many of the victims are only in middle-age. Over 11,500 men and women die of liver disease every year in the UK, up from 9,200 in 2001.

It is estimated that just below 80 per cent of these deaths are caused by alcohol and obesity, and the other 20 per cent are caused by hepatitis and inherited conditions.

The habit of overeating also puts the lives of over 500,000 obese young people in the UK at risk of serious liver disease according to recent reports by the Department of Health.

Angeles hospital in Tijuana

Although alcohol is a major cause to liver damage, many people are not aware of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, which is associated with being overweight.

Doctors have created a new treatment for liver disease that might save hundreds of lives per year and end the need for liver transplant surgery.

Liver experts really need new therapies for the epidemic of liver diseases that is causing a huge demand for donor livers.

Eighteen British children who have rare and life threatening liver conditions will receive infusions of specially treated liver stem cells that have been removed from the organs of dead donors.

Doctors will create vital stem cells, the building blocks of life, and regenerate the impaired organ.

The world’s first trial using liver stem cells will take place at London’s King’s College Hospital and is to be headed by pediatric liver specialist Professor Anil Dhawan.

He said the use of stem cells to treat liver disease is an ‘exciting breakthrough’.

He commented: ‘We have many very sick children and babies who need transplants. If we can cure them without a transplant, that will be a fantastic development.

‘We have tried using ordinary liver cells with limited success, but is the first time a treatment has been developed that gets the liver to re-grow using stem cells.’

This comes after they successfully treated baby Iyaad Syed last year.

Iyaad was healthy at birth in February 2011 but his liver began to fail after he contracted the herpes-simplex virus. Professor Dhawan injected donor liver stem cells into the boy’s abdomen when he was only two weeks old. In November the doctors announced that Iyaad had recovered well and that his own liver was functioning normally again

Stem cells are human or animal cells that are undifferentiated, meaning they have the ability to transform into different organ cells. They are highly useful in various treatments as they heal damaged fibres and repair weak cells through cell division, a process in which they multiply indefinitely.

Angeles hospital’s stem cell therapies use human, adult stem cells only and in most cases the cells are autologous, which means they come from the patient’s own body. This removes any ethical dilemmas a patient may have faced had they been considering embryonic stem cell therapy and also means there is less of a chance of a patient rejecting the cells due to them being from a foreign body.

At Angeles Health our autologous stem cell therapy usually involves stem cells from the patient’s adipose tissue (fat) or bone marrow. We commonly use adipose tissue, or fat, as it produces up to ten times more stem cells than bone marrow extraction.

Stem cell therapy can be used for various medical conditions including heart problems such as congestive heart failure and stroke, and respiratory illnesses like COPD.

Angeles Health is in fact a Bioheart stem cell center of excellence and has made great progress in using stem cell therapy for heart conditions. Many of our patients have made significant progress after the devastating experiencing of suffering a heart attack. You can see one of great success stories on the stem cell therapy testimonial page.

Congestive heart failure symptoms vary between people and depend on which specific organ systems are involved in their disease as well as how much the rest of the body “compensates” for the weakness of the heart muscle.

A common early congestive heart failure symptom is fatigue. Fatigue is a good indicator of potential congestive heart failure, but it is also a nonspecific symptom that can be caused by countless other medical conditions. There could also be a reduced ability to exercise. Some people reduce their activities to deal with this limitation, even though they might not even notice the decrease in their abilities, so it is a subconscious process.

Edema, a swelling of the ankles and legs or abdomen, is one of the congestive heart failure symptoms that is caused by the body getting overloaded with fluid. In this case the right-sided heart chambers fail to pump venous blood to the lungs for oxygen acquisition and fluid builds up in places like the legs. This is commonly caused by long-term left-sided heart failure which can lead to secondary right-sided heart failure. Other possible causes of right-sided heart failure are severe lung disease and intrinsic disease of the right heart muscle, the latter of which is much less common.

Another congestive heart failure symptom is fluid accumulation in the lungs. This causes shortness of breath, especially whilst exercising and when lying flat. Sometimes patients wake up at night gasping for air.

Congestive heart failure symptoms like this mean some people can’t sleep unless they are sitting upright.

Extra fluid in the body can cause increased urination, especially at night.

Accumulated fluid in the liver and intestines, another one of the common congestive heart failure symptoms, can cause nausea, abdominal pain, and reduced appetite.

Stem cell therapy can help with these congestive heart failure symptoms. Here at Angeles Health we offer patient funded stem cell therapy trials for congestive heart failure and other medical conditions such as COPD and others.
